Editorial note. This paper was written shortly before Wolfgang Köhler's death, in response to an invitation to address the American Psychological Association at its 1967 meetings. It is the last scientific paper that he wrote. The manuscript is published here in the form in which he left it. The original manuscript will be deposited with the Library of the American Philosophical Society as part of the Wolfgang Köhler collection.
