Summary

The phasic velocity and acceleration in the pulmonary artery of 14 nembutal anesthetized dogs has been measured by an ultrasound catheter tip velocity flow probe. The method is based on the phase discrimination technique. The velocity parameters are recorded under control conditions, during isoproterenol infusion, after propanolol injection, during single and paired pacing and following macrodex® infusion. Under control conditions the maximal velocities changed individually in a range of 32 to 134 cm/sec, the maximal accelerations varied between 0.8 and 2.2 g. The highest measured values were found during betastimulation with isoproterenol (v max 156 cm/sec,\(\dot v_{max} \) 3.7 g). The relation of the velocity and acceleration parameters to cardiac output, stroke volume and heart rate are analysed. Maximal ejection velocity and its acceleration proved to be a useful parameter in the assessment of ventricular performance. Their determination reveals a more precise understanding of the external developed cardiac force in the course of auxotonic contraction. An analysis of our data from this point of view is presented in this paper.
