Abstract
Geomorphological and soil mechanics studies carried out on saproliths and on mudflow deposits derived from three different lithological units outcropping in the Aburrá Valley (Colombia)—amphibolite, spilite and diorite—show a strong convergency of some of the physical properties of each group: saproliths tend to be similar, independently of their parent rocks; the same phenomenon occurs for mudflow deposits. From a genetic standpoint, these features wuld imply a predominant influence of the processes which originated both saproliths and mudflow deposits with respect to the composition of the parent rocks.
For the saproliths, chemical weathering plays the main role in the homogenization of their properties; in the case of mudflows, these properties are the result of three successive processes: oversaturation, transport and consolidation of the original regolith.
