Abstract
Lightweight structures are limited in their ability to damp mechanical vibrations. As a result, requirements for specific damping behaviour often lead to design modifications which conflict with the original lightweight concept. In contrast, hollow-sphere structures allow vibration energy to be dissipated and therefore particulate fillers can be used as additional damping elements in familiar hollow-sphere structures made of metal. these particulate-filled, steel hollow-sphere structures form the basic building blocks for a new category of lightweight materials for damping structure-borne noise.
