Abstract
The question of corporations’ social responsibility is a matter of intense public discussions. Despite of this, this topic remains rather underrepresented within german-spreaking university teachings. Hence, this article is concerned with the relevance of business ethics in business studies.
It is illustrated that the reason for the increased attention is the change of the socio-political environmention under which multinational corporations act nowadays. The nation states’ regulative deficits on the global level as well as the changed public expectations concerning corporations pose new challenges in order to fulfil their economic and societal tasks. This increasingly transcends a mere compliance management designed to avoid harmful behaviour, but rather shifts towards “doing the right thing”. In their struggle for legitimacy, corporations are confronted with a highly complex environment, whose discussions tend to misinterpret the relation between economically successful and morally acceptable business behaviour as a dichotomous one. An appropriate understanding of this relation as well as a sustainable management must not be reduced to an economic mindset but must distinguish itself through a pragmatic and solution-oriented attitude as well as a principal openness towards different rationalities. The teaching of this is (also) the task of university education.
