Abstract
This review establishes links between somatotherapy-a method of psychotherapy using physical methods-and herbal preparations that treat the effects of stress. The two methods, somatotherapy and herbal medicine, function through the structures of the limbic system, most notably the areas of the brain where the mechanisms involved in emotions are located. We emphasize certain Chinese and Japanese preparations that act on these brain centres. The preparations include drugs such as magnolia, liquorice and jujube.
