Abstract

Degradation and decolouration of erythrosine dye using gamma radiation was investigated. In addition, the effects of radiation doses on UV–visible spectroscopy, pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total inorganic carbon (TOC), kinetic study and colourimetric analysis also were studied. The absorption band located at λ = 528 nm and the value of the colour difference (ΔE*) increase with increasing absorbed dose. Kinetic study showed that the erythrosine degradation was pseudo-first order. The removal efficiency of the food colouring, COD and TOC reached 97% and 81% at 15 kGy, respectively.
