The Impact of Carotenoids on Immunity (Review)

The review covered carotenoids, a large class of natural compounds characterized by a broad spectrum of biological effects, one of which is the ability to influence the immune system. Their mechanisms of action on the human immune system were discussed. The ability of carotenoids to influence both humoral immunity and cellular immunity opens prospects for using these agents in the therapy of a wide range of diseases such as cancer, infectious diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, inflammatory processes, cardiovascular pathology, etc. The latest investigations of the role of carotenoids in gene regulation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis revealed some possible mechanisms of immune system regulation.
