Abstract
Informed consent is an ethical and legal issue. Invasive procedures such as colonoscopy require shared information, shared decision making and shared responsibilities between physicians and patients. Complete and unbiased information about the nature of the procedure and the indication for it, as well as the risks, benefits and alternatives must be provided. The amount of information patients require in order to provide informed consent is sometimes difficult to assess and is often underestimated by doctors. Traditionally this information has been provided verbally. Additional information is often provided in the form of leaflets. Only a few studies have tested the effects of providing information on precolonoscopy anxiety and knowledge.
