Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the history, current status, and underlying technology of ‘Internet telephony’ — the transport of speech information over a packet-switched connectionless network. The economics of Internet telephony and a number of possible system architectures for interconnection with the switched telephone network are examined. The paper concludes with a look at the quality of service issues raised by Internet telephony.
