Abstract

The process of innovation and technological development have generated situations of risk to post-industrial societies of the twenty-first century, becoming what several authors have called a “risk society.” However, risks do not spread homogeneously among societies. Some less developed regions never share the goods, but the risks, attributed to the intensification of technological and productive processes arising from the globalization of the markets. The objective of this chapter is to discuss and analyze the generation of risks to national catastrophes, such as flooding, in tropical areas with late capitalism. We developed our ideas using Alagoas littoral zone (Brazil) as a case study.
