Abstract
The introduction provides an overview of the objectives and scope of The Colonial Public and the Parsi Stage. It describes how the book not only offers foundational primary source information on the Parsi theatre between 1853 and 1893 but also analyzes a meta-theatre of imperialism and nationalism. The chapter introduces several concepts: the Parsis as cultural compradors, the vernacular public sphere, the gendering of the projects of social reform and nationalism, and the book’s relationship to the archive.
