Mapping the Generations: Survey of the Literature on Multigenerational Memory

Abstract

In this conceptual chapter, I explore recent publication and show how a broader reading of social and natural science traditions and concepts is needed in order to grasp the multidimensional human experience of memory beyond the individual. In surveying the literature, I also draw out some clinical and psychosocial implications of holding a multigenerational and interdisciplinary perspective. The initial survey on which this chapter is based was carried out in 2018 and provides a snapshot of academic publications in this area. It gives an idea of an existing culture and its ways of thinking.
