Abstract
Between 1786 and 1802, a Scottish engineer named William Playfair published Commercial and Political Atlas a collection of data vizualizations illustrating economic and political trends of the 18th century. The book introduced the first line and pie charts, skillfully designed and furnished with narrative to guide readers through the economic patterns of the day.

Notes
- 1.
While this screen capture is from a Mac computer, the layout is quite similar on a Windows machine.
- 2.
The histogram will look similar but not exactly the same, as the \(n=10000\) observations are randomly drawn. In subsequent chapters, we show a simple way to ensure that the same simulation can be replicated on any computer.
