Abstract
This chapter shows how Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) education in a university in Hong Kong made use of both synchronous and asynchronous online teaching resources during the pandemic period. This chapter explained how this “experiment” influenced language teachers’ and students’ perceptions concerning synchronous online teaching mode in CSL. Before the pandemic, both teachers and students had reservations toward this teaching mode. Institutional supports, students’ views and teachers’ concerns were discussed. After its actual implementation, there was a paradigm shift of teachers’ and students’ expectations toward synchronous online teaching and blended teaching. Samples of synchronous CSL “classroom” activities were examined and showed the potential of synchronous CSL teaching and learning in the long run.
