Applying Empathy Theory in Online Chinese Language Education: Examples from a Chinese University

Abstract

This chapter consists of three sections: first, it provides a brief overview of the empathy theory and its applications in education. Second, it discusses in detail for how to apply the empathy theory in online Chinese language education with examples, taking from the author’s experience teaching international students majoring in Chinese language in a Chinese university in 2020. Third, the chapter summarizes the new roles of teachers in applying empathy in online Chinese language education and suggests an empathetic model that involves multidisciplinary knowledge and approaches. To conclude, the chapter emphasizes the importance and benefits of empathy in education, particularly online language teaching. The interdisciplinary knowledge of Chinese teachers plays a positive auxiliary role in international Chinese teaching.

This study is the result of a collaborative project of the Ministry of Education (202101121047). This study is also a phased result of the 2020 school-level education and teaching reform project of China University of Political Science and Law, entitled “Research on ‘the Belt and Road Initiative’ Legal Talents Training and Chinese Textbooks” (JG2020A014) and a phased result of the research project on the ideological and political work of teachers at China University of Political Science and Law “Research on the ideological status and cross cultural quality of Chinese as a foreign language teachers”.
