The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology

Abstract

The diagnosis of suspicious for high-grade urothelial carcinoma (SHGUC) is meant to reflect the presence of a small number of urothelial cells with increased nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio and severe nuclear atypia that falls short for a diagnosis of HGUC, but beyond atypia that is associated with the category of atypical urothelial cells (AUC). This chapter describes the detailed quantitative and qualitative cytomorphologic criteria needed for a diagnosis of SHGUC. It also discusses the prevalence of this diagnosis in the literature and the associated risk of high-grade malignancy (ROHM).
