Zusammenfassung

Der vorliegende Beitrag liefert einen Überblick über die religionssoziologische Debatte zum Verhältnis von Religion und sozialer Ungleichheit. Dabei wird soziale Ungleichheit unter dem Aspekt der sozialen Schichtung betrachtet. Das Verhältnis von sozialer Schichtung und Religion wurde in den USA verhältnismäßig stark diskutiert. Während die Debatte bis in die 1970er Jahre von einem klaren Zusammenhang zwischen sozialer Schichtung und Denominationszugehörigkeit ausging, wurde die These von der sozialen Stratifikation der religiösen Landschaft der USA in der Folgezeit zunehmend in Frage gestellt. So liegen heute unterschiedliche empirische Befunde vor: Während einige Studien einen anhaltend starken und mitunter sogar wachsenden Zusammenhang feststellen, verweisen andere auf eine nur sehr geringe und nachlassende Beziehung zwischen den beiden Variablen „soziale Ungleichheit“ und „Religion“. Im Anschluss an die empirischen Befunde stellt der vorliegende Beitrag theoretische Konzepte vor, die das Verhältnis der beiden Variablen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven beleuchten: als Einfluss von sozialer Schichtung auf Religion, als Einfluss von Religion auf die Schichtposition und als reziprokes Wechselverhältnis. In der Auseinandersetzung mit der Debatte zeigt sich, dass qualitative Untersuchungen zum Verhältnis von sozialer Ungleichheit und Religion sowie umfassende Studien zur Religiosität von Mittel- und Oberschichten bisher kaum vorliegen.
