Abstract
In this chapter we introduce the main ideas of the theory of oscillations, starting from the ideas of Mandelstam about non-linear thinking, commonness and mutual aid between oscillations of different kinds. We give two definitions of self-sustained systems: the original dating back to the 1930s, and the one updated in light of new discoveries of the 20th century. The crucial features of self-sustained oscillations and of the systems producing them are described. The most general definition of synchronization is given.
