Zusammenfassung

Die Überprüfung von regionalen Abweichungen in Diagnose und Therapie dient dazu, Sektoren von Unterversorgung, aber auch von Überversorgung aufzudecken, um so das Gesundheitssystem effizienter und effektiver zu gestalten. Damit ist die Analyse von regionalen Unterschieden in der Versorgung ein wichtiges Hilfsmittel, um den Behandlungsstandard zu definieren und Qualitätsziele festzumachen. Dies gelingt auf diese Weise sogar oft besser als mit randomisierten Studien und ihren (zu) zahlreichen Ausschlusskriterien. Auch lässt sich mit regionalen Unterschieden die Etablierung von Behandlungszentren begründen. Wie die folgenden Beispiele zeigen werden, gilt dies für die operative und nichtoperative Krankenhausbehandlung gleichermaßen.
