Epidemiology of Injuries in Sports

Abstract

Basketball is a popular high-speed contact sport with a mild potential for injuries.

The lower limbs are the most affected, regardless of gender or level, and the majority of injuries occur in the knee and the ankle, and then in the thigh, hip and leg.

Scientific studies proved the effectiveness of prevention protocols for ankle injuries but not for knee injuries.

The treatment of injuries is conservative in the vast majority of cases, while surgery is needed for the knee ligament lesions primarily.

The return to play timing is a decision that must be agreed with the medical staff, the athletic trainer, the player and the coaches, considering the clinical, functional and sport specific tests.
