Inleiding

Mensen met een ernstige verstandelijke beperking die seksueel misbruik meemaken, zullen vaak cognitief niet kunnen begrijpen wat hen overkomen is. Wanneer bij deze cliënten seksueel misbruik plaatsvindt door een belangrijke ander van wie het slachtoffer afhankelijk is, wordt de cliënt geschaad in zijn vertrouwen. De cliënt ervaart dat degene aan wie hij zich toevertrouwt, ook degene is die hem pijn kan doen. De behoefte aan bescherming, die de cliënt zowel op lichamelijk als emotioneel gebied heeft, wordt tegelijkertijd ook bedreigend en risicovol; een probleem waar niet uit te komen is. De cliënt zal de neiging kunnen ontwikkelen emotioneel contact te ontlopen en zich terugtrekken.
