Abstract
Continuing their study of the ethiopathogenesis of high myopia, the authors have determined serum Cortisol, testosterone, 17 β-estradiol, progesterone and urinary 17-KS and 17-OHCS, in a group of 55 males and 32 fecund females with high myopia (above — 10 D); the patients were strictly selected, excluding from the study all cases with signs of systemic disease.
The results showed in both sexes an increase in serum Cortisol level, as compared with a control group. Further there was a reduced serum testosterone in males, and an increased 17 β-estradiol in females, however only in the first half of the menstrual cycle. Progesteron showed no change.
The present results indicate a pathogenetic correlation between changes concerning glucocorticoid and sexual steroids and reduced resistance of the sclera in high myopia.
