Abstract
An extensive knowledge about the packaging material is crucial in designing of packaging material for particular products. Properties of packaging materials such as mechanical strength, gas permeability, and sealing ability determine the suitability of packaging material for intended purpose. Thus, it is necessary to determine the properties of packaging material to select the suitable material for any product. Testing of packaging materials generally involves determination of physical properties. But it is also important to study the chemical stability of a packaging material, particularly when it would be used for food-based applications, so as to ensure the safety of the product. There are several standard testing protocols for packaging materials, and this chapter provides detailed information about testing methods that are in use to evaluate various properties of packaging materials. Further, some methods are specific to the type of packaging material, and these are also covered in this chapter.
