Abstract

Joseph Leighton developed sponge-matrix histoculture in the early 1950s and is the father of true 3D cell and tissue culture. Dr. Leighton demonstrated that sponge-matrix histoculture could replicate in vivo-like tissue structure and function by allowing cells to take their natural shape.
