External performance measures are used to assess an organization's performance in terms of its externally observable outputs. For a manufacturing organization these will be items such as price, delivery lead time, customer returns, warranty claims, etc. These are essentially output measures which relate directly to the competitive priorities of the organization's products. As such they are measures that can usually be compared directly against equivalent measures of competitors and can provide a basis for benchmarking against competitors.
