Definition

Multimedia proxy caching, which is a small proxy server cache that is located close to a group of clients and is administrated by them, caches some popular streams from different servers with appropriate quality, with the goal to improve scalability and quality of service by reducing network traffic and delivery delay.

The high bandwidth requirements and continuous streaming demand of digital video coupled with the best effort service model of IP networks and the heterogeneity of end user devices makes it difficult to provide quality of service for multimedia streaming.
