Introduction
Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, ethnic minority education has become one of the main concerns in multiethnic China. On the one hand, the government highly emphasizes the role of education in developing ethnic minority groups and promoting interethnic unity within the country. On the other hand, interethnic disparities in education, especially the gap between the Han group and ethnic minorities, have been widely acknowledged and documented by government officials and scholars. Ethnic minorities, accounting for 8.4% of China’s total population, refer to the 55 officially recognized ethnic groups (minzu) in China that have much smaller populations than that of the Han group.
