Leukocyte Adhesion to Endothelium

Part of the book series: Blood Cell Biochemistry ((BLBI,volume 5))

Abstract

The recruitment of leukocytes from the blood is a prerequisite for their participation in inflammatory responses within the tissues. In the case of monocytes, a low level of emigration takes place under physiological conditions, but this is greatly increased in the inflammatory setting. An analysis of mechanisms of monocyte—endothelial cell (EC) adhesion is therefore of great relevance to understanding the pathophysiology of diverse acute and chronic inflammatory conditions as well as that of wound healing and tissue repair.
