Constantin Carathéodory (1873–1950)

  • Chapter
Mathematics in Berlin

Abstract

It is not handed down but it looks very likely that Carathéodory’s decision to accept the call to replace Frobenius in 1918 at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin was a surprise to many of his contemporaries. Since 1913 he was full professor in Göttingen as the successor of Felix Klein. At that time Göttingen was the leading German university in mathematics.
