Myocardial Ischemia During Inhalation Anesthesia in Surgical Patients with Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract

Modern monitoring techniques have allowed the anesthesiologist to care successfully for patients with advanced cardiac disease. Consequently, an increasing number of high-risk patients are being selected for elective noncardiac surgery. The incidence of intraoperative subendocardial ischemia may vary greatly with different anesthetic agents and techniques [1–5]. This paper will review the current understanding of mechanisms involved in the production of myocardial ischemia during inhalation anesthesia in patients with ischemic heart disease.
