The aminomethylation of phenyl-, p-tolyl-, and chloroferrocenes occurs predominantly in the unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl ring. The ratio of the amounts of hetero- and homoannular isomers is about 5∶1.

Methods were developed for the separation of hetero- and homoannular derivatives of (dimethylamino-methyl)ferrocenes on alumina impregnated with formamide and on Chromatographic paper.

1-Methyl-1'-p-tolylferrocene was prepared.
