Abstract
A calculation is presented for the deformation of a solid surface when subjected to laser irradiation. The elastic response of the target is given in terms of the stress and displacement field due to thermal expansion, thus allowing an explicit evaluation of the shape of the deformed target surface. Quantitative results are obtained for the height and shape of the induced bump as a function of the laser pulse and target properties. The thermal load threshold is specified for the onset of plastic yield.
