Sintering of silicon nitride in a powder bed

Abstract

Silicon nitride with the addition of MgO as a sintering aid can be sintered at atmospheric pressure by embedding the powder compacts in a loose powder mixture. By choosing a suitable composition of the powder in the bed it is possible to control both the decomposition of the Si3N4 and the loss by volatilization of the MgO. In this way one can obtain homogeneously sintered articles of complex shapes of density >3.0 Mg m−3.
