Abstract
It is shown that application of an axially symmetric nonuniform high-frequency field (frequency 1 kHz to 25 MHz) to the positive column of the stationary discharge in a CO2 gas laser causes a contraction of the column and leads to a reduction in the power of the laser which may be explained by an increase in the gas temperature and the average electron energy and, also, by a reduction in the “effective” lasing volume.
