Summary
A description of a carbonyl group determination is given. In this the material being studied is condensed to the corresponding hydrazones by means of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine or 4-nitrophenylhydrazine or of 2,4,6trinitrophenylhydrazine. The unconsumed nitrophenylhydrazine is reduced with titanous chloride and the excess of the latter is determined volumetrically by ferric ammonium sulfate.
In case the quantitative transformation is not successful, the number of carbonyl groups can be calculated from the nitrogen content of the pure hydrazone that has been prepared by the given procedure.
