Abstract
Electron-microscopical investigation of gem-opals revealed many interesting details about the three-dimensional packing of spheres forming the precious opal. Micrographs showing different lattice planes, stacking faults and twinning are published. Furthermore, it was possible to obtain many stereopictures giving a direct three dimensional view of the ordered layers and the array of spheres. The relation between the wavelength of light reflected by different lattice-planes and the lattice constant was the subject of a tentative examination.
