Summary
Instead of “mycetoma” the term ofgranosis (affection with “grain” formation) is suggested.
In the author's opinion, the causative organisms of mycetoma may be divided in 2 groups:specific agents (causing exclusively mycetoma) andnot specific agents (producing also other clinical pictures). An up to date view on the actual opinions concerning the saprophytic origine of mycetoma is presented. Present state of the pathogenicity, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of this disease are discussed.
