Abstract
Until now the pathomechanism of the inflammation or septicemia in man and other animals produced byE. insidiosa has been unknown. The discovery of neuraminidase inE. insidiosa suggested the pathogenic role of this enzyme. The following experiment supports this notion.
E. insidiosa neuraminidase was isolated and purified. A specific anti-E. insidiosa-neuraminidase-antiserum was produced in a rabbit. This antiserum protected mice against a normally fatalE. insidiosa infection with statistical significance (P<0.007 respectivelyP<0.002).
Therefore neuraminidase is an important pathogenic factor inE. insidiosa infection. Blocking of this enzyme with antiserum effects the loss of pathogenicity ofE. insidiosa.
