Summary
The light reflex of the pupil of unanesthetized pigeons was used as indicator of retinal activity. The change of the area of the pupil in response to light flashes of 0.1 sec duration was measured continuously by reflecting infrared light from the iris onto a photocell.
With a 3° field light stimulus the pigeon's iris starts to contract after a latent period of 30 to 200 msec (depending on the luminance and the colour of test light and state of adaptation), the maximum contraction being completed after 70 to 260 msec. The threshold luminance of the pupillary light reflex in the pigeon is about two times that of the periphery of the human eye. With light stimuli of various wavelengths between 402 to 676 nm the threshold distribution of the pupillary reflex exhibits a close resemblance to the spectral sensitivity curves obtained with behavioural tests and electroretinal recordings.
The experimental results demonstrate the infrared reflex pupillography to be useful as a threshold method of studying retinal function in animals.
