Summary
The term free swelling of wood can, to a limited extent, be applied only where wood is swelling without any external mechanical stress and without a remarkable internal moisture gradient. On the basis of sorption tests on different wood species, swelling in radial and tangential direction has been determined to be a function of the moisture content. Within the range of the practically used moisture content, the different tial swelling is nearly constant. In the case of low and high sorptional morsture content, a specific course of swelling can be observed. Also the individual radial and langential components show significant differences in the course of sweeling. The results obtained point to the fact that the course of swelling of different wood species is influenced by variable creeping and relaxation phenomera.
