Abstract

Much has been speculated about the components that make Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (emdr) effective, but not much is clear. The much heard opinion that the effectiveness of emdris mainly caused by suggestion was never seriously analysed. The author claims that emdrbears a close resemblance with hypnosis, especially with the fractional induction technique of Langen. The article discusses the emdrcomponents that enhance suggestibility and the other similarities between emdrand hypnosis. Furthermore, he analyses the linguistic patterns and implicit suggestions of the emdrprotocol. The author does not hold that emdris ineffective, nor that it is merely a suggestive technique. He does argue that emdroptimally incorporates suggestive techniques.
