Conclusion
In summary, Gd-enhanced dynamic MR imaging is an established, highly sensitive technique for studying breast cancer in well-defined situations. The role of breast MR imaging will increase over the next few years. Advances in both technique (high temporal/spatial resolution) and contrast agents (high T1-relaxivity Gd-chelates, as well as blood-pool agents and lymph-nodetargeted agents) should increase sensitivity and specifity. Proton MR spectroscopy may add further possibilities for the characterization of lesions.
It remains to be seen how these new directions, combined with future developments in hardware (e.g., breast-dedicated MR equipment), will impact on the future of MR imaging of the breast.
