Abstract
Background
Pure squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach is an extremely rare finding with a worldwide incidence of 0.04 – 0.07% (2).
Methods
We present the case of a 78-year-old female who presented with a right hip fracture and was found to have worsening post-prandial vomiting and weight loss.
Results
Esophagogastroscopy showed a 1.5 cm tumor located along the lesser curvature of the stomach. Endoscopic biopsy specimens of the tumor demonstrated primary squamous cell carcinoma. A workup for an extragastric squamous cell primary source was negative.
Conclusions
The origin of pure squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach has not been well elucidated and thus several plausible theories have been proposed. In the presented case, the patient had a long standing history of gastric erosions and the tumor was adjacent to significant inflammatory mucosa. Therefore, it may be considered that the tumor arises from squamous metaplasia secondary to chronic mucosal damage.
