Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus might be either an unknown type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosed during pregnancy or a glucose tolerance impairment appearing during pregnancy; these two conditions have different prognosis. There is a positive linear correlation between maternal hyperglycemia and perinatal complications. Maternal obesity is an independent risk factor for perinatal complications.
