Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the development of self-reported strategy use and metacognitive strategy knowledge during one year of schooling at the upper secondary school level. Further, the interplay between strategy use and metacognitive knowledge is explored. Longitudinal data were collected from students in grade 10 and 11 at the beginning (N = 1272) and at the end (N = 1126) of one school year. Statistical analyses based on latent change models revealed gains of elaboration, planning, and evaluation strategy use over time. No development was found for transformation strategy use and metacognitive strategy knowledge. On the one hand, results of cross-lagged panel analyses showed that self-reported strategy use did not predict the development of metacognitive strategy knowledge at the upper secondary school level. On the other hand, the analyses revealed that changes of transformation and evaluation strategy use could be significantly predicted by metacognitive strategy knowledge. Theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed.
