Abstract
An analysis is presented of the current views on the functional respiratory disorders associated with depressive and panic disorders. The following subjects are discussed: the phenomenology of the problem, modern diagnostic methods, the role of hypocapnia in the symptomatological development of panic disorders, the relative contributions of psychogenic and biological factors in developing respiratory disorders, and the distinctions between dyspnea and the hyperventilation syndrome.
