Medical advances and organisational arrangements have vastly improved the immediate and short-term treatment of patients suffering spinal-cord injury. There remains a huge lack of knowledge, however, about almost all aspects of the lives of paraplegic and tetraplegic patients once they have left the intensive care and treatment of spinal injuries centres. The authors have conducted a survey of long-term spinal cord injury patients and in this book they have given the main conclusions of their survey together with the general problems that the survey and other research has highlighted. There are commentaries and recommendations that will be of vital interest to all those working with the long-term disabled, including social services departments, health visitors, GPs, charities, physicians and nursing staff as well as the disabled themselves.
