Femtosecond Pulse Generation: Principles and Fiber Applications

  • Chapter
Ultrafast Dynamics of Quantum Systems

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series: B: ((NSSB,volume 372))

Abstract

The principles of ultrashort pulse generation by passive modelocking are outlined. Particular attention is paid to the fast saturable absorber case as exemplified by Kerr-lens modelocking (KLM) and polarization additive-pulse-modelocking (P-APM). Steady-state behavior is described in the context of the master equation, and limitations of theory and practice are discussed. Application of these principles to ultrashort-pulse fiber lasers is demonstrated by soliton laser and stretched-pulse laser examples.
