Conclusion

Prior to total knee arthroplasty, standard AP, lateral, and tangential axial views are usually sufficient for evaluation and surgical planning of most patients with significant arthritis. Supplemental views such as semiflexed standing and tunnel views can be helpful for detecting joint-space narrowing that is not evident on routine images. Advanced imaging modalities such as nuclear and magnetic resonance imaging can be useful for specific clinical indications such as diagnosis and prognostication of osteonecrosis and assessment of clinically significant arthritis in the face of nearly normal radiographs.
